Coyotes in the RM
We are aware that there has been many sightings of Coyotes in our residential areas such as Pleasant Heights and Collacot as well as throughout the RM. Please be advised that Coyotes are considered a common part of the urban/rural landscape in the RM of Orkney. Coyotes help to control the local rodent populations.
Safety Guidelines for Coyote Encounters:
Allow Space: Give the animals room to leave
Do not approach or feed: Never feed Coyotes or get close to them. Please ensure things such as garbage, compost, fallen fruit and pet food are cleaned up or put indoors or appropriate containers.
Be Assertive: Make direct eye contact, wave your arms and make noise to scare the animal away. Do not run as this could trigger a chase response.
Protect Pets: Keep dogs on leash and watch small pets closely, as coyotes will view them as potential threats or prey. Please make sure to keep any dog or cat food in a safe space (indoors) as this will also attract the coyotes.
